In the late morning of August 30, 2023, the Beechwood neighborhood of Rochester, New York, was disrupted by a sudden act of violence. Rego Ellis, a 49-year-old Black male, was walking near the intersection of Beechwood Street and Hayward Avenue at approximately 11 a.m. when a vehicle approached him. An occupant inside the car opened fire, discharging nearly two dozen rounds in his direction.
Struck by multiple gunshots, Ellis was rushed to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The shooting took place in front of a Habitat for Humanity home that was under construction, though it was determined that Ellis had no connection to the project. The brazen nature of the daytime shooting left the community shaken, with residents expressing their concerns over what they perceived as an increase in violence in their area.
The Rochester Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide of Rego Ellis. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
