In the early hours of a summer morning in Rochester, New York, the life of 24-year-old Yasier Clark, a Black male, was brought to a sudden and violent end. On June 11, 2022, in the city's East End bar district, an earlier argument escalated into a fatal encounter. Clark, also known by the nickname Guwop, had been involved in a dispute with a group of individuals, including a 17-year-old named Anthony Grimes.
Though the initial confrontation seemed to disperse, the conflict was far from over.
Later that same morning, at approximately 1:00 a.m., as Yasier Clark was exiting a vehicle at the corner of East Avenue and Lawrence Street, he was tragically shot. Police officers who responded to the scene found Clark with a gunshot wound to his upper body; he was pronounced dead at the location. The unexpected death of the young man, who was a father of two, sent ripples of grief through his family and community, who remembered him for his humble spirit and charming smile.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed toward the teenager from the earlier argument. For a couple of months, Anthony Grimes managed to evade law enforcement. However, his time as a fugitive came to an end in an unexpected way. On an afternoon in September, police in the nearby city of Auburn stopped Grimes for illegally riding a motorized bicycle. During the stop, he acted suspiciously and provided a false identity, but the persistent officers soon discovered his true name and the active warrant for his arrest in connection with Clark's murder. It was also revealed that Grimes had a prior arrest in April of that year for possession of a loaded handgun.
Following his arrest, Anthony Grimes was transported back to Rochester to face the consequences of his actions. He was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. The case proceeded through the justice system, and ultimately, Grimes pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. In March 2024, the teenager was sentenced to serve 16 years in prison for his role in the death of Yasier Clark, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a story that ended one life and forever altered another.
