In the summer of 2019, the city of Rochester, New York, was experiencing a surge in violence that would tragically claim the life of Daniel Sutton Jr., a 26-year-old male. On the evening of July 10th, Sutton was on Ernst Street when he was shot at least once. Despite his injuries, he managed to flee the scene and sought help at a nearby store on Hudson Avenue.
He was rushed to Rochester General Hospital in a private vehicle but succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead.
The Rochester Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, which was the fourth in the city in just four days, a fact that deeply concerned law enforcement and the community. The investigation ultimately led to a significant break in the case several months later. On October 24, 2019, authorities announced the arrests of two teenagers in connection with Sutton's death.
Rickey Moore Jr., who was 16 years old at the time, and 18-year-old Josiah Wright were taken into custody. Both were charged with second-degree murder and four counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Moore was arraigned in Youth Part Court, while Wright appeared in Monroe County Court. The arrests brought a measure of progress in a case that had highlighted the alarming rate of gun violence impacting the city.
