In the early hours of New Year's Day 2024, the life of 44-year-old Ozzie Gardner was tragically cut short in Albany, New York. The male victim was shot and killed following a dispute that originated at a party. The incident unfolded near the intersection of Judson and Second streets in the West Hill neighborhood, marking the city's first homicide of the year.
Police responded to the scene at approximately 12:42 a.m. to find Gardner with gunshot wounds to his chest.
Emergency medical personnel treated him at the location before transporting him to Albany Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Investigators determined that an argument that began at a nearby party escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. It was believed that Gardner was acquainted with the person who shot him.
In the months following the shooting, a suspect was identified and apprehended by law enforcement. John Stanfield, a 42-year-old man from Albany, was indicted by a grand jury in connection with Gardner's death. He was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Stanfield initially pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, he later pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. As a result of his guilty plea, he is expected to be sentenced to 35 years in prison, which will be followed by parole.
