In the summer of 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace of Randall's Island, leaving a family and community in mourning. On July 29, 44-year-old Sandra Serrano was fatally shot in the face and back in a brazen act of violence. The attack also left two others wounded; a 32-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the throat, and a 31-year-old woman was shot in the back.
Emergency services rushed to the scene at Field 71, and Serrano was transported to Harlem Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she was pronounced dead. The other two victims were also taken to Harlem Hospital and were reported to be in stable condition.
In the days that followed, the New York Police Department identified Sandra Serrano as the deceased victim of the shooting. As of early August 2024, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have offered a reward of up to $3,500 for any information that leads to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this violent act. The NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline and the 25th Precinct Detective Squad are actively seeking tips from the public to help solve the case.
