On May 5, 2023, the life of 27-year-old Riley Nicole O’Laughlin was tragically cut short in a warehouse in North Kansas City, Missouri. A female who had been actively turning her life around, her death was the culmination of a situation steeped in domestic turmoil.
In the weeks leading up to the fatal shooting, Riley had taken steps to protect herself from a man named John C. Hadley.
She had reported to the North Kansas City Police on April 22 that Hadley had kidnapped her from her workplace. According to her family, Hadley had lured her into a car, locked the doors, and drove for hours before she could persuade him to stop. Concerns about his behavior had been mounting among her loved ones for months. Following the kidnapping, O'Laughlin filed a police report and sought a protection order.
Despite these efforts, on that Friday morning in May, Hadley confronted O'Laughlin at her place of employment, the same location from which she had previously been kidnapped. Inside the warehouse, he fatally shot her before taking his own life in what police have described as a murder-suicide. Both O'Laughlin and Hadley were found with gunshot wounds and later died at the hospital.
Riley’s family believes that her death could have been prevented and have expressed their devastation and frustration. At the time of the shooting, the kidnapping she had reported was still under investigation. Those close to her remember a vibrant woman who had recently been baptized and was planning a missionary trip. Her pastor, who had accompanied her to the police station to file the report, spoke of her positive new direction in life. The investigation into the murder-suicide remains open.
