On September 2, 2014, a quiet cul-de-sac in south Kansas City, Missouri, became the scene of a violent rampage that claimed multiple lives. Residents of the Woodbridge Lane neighborhood were shaken when a chaotic series of events unfolded in the middle of the day. The disturbance began at the home of an elderly couple where a intruder attempted to steal a vintage Jaguar. When the theft failed, the assailant severely beat the homeowners before stealing their Toyota SUV instead.
As the situation escalated, the attacker moved through the neighborhood with lethal intent, targeting others who crossed his path.
Among the victims was Alice Lorene Hurst, an 88-year-old White female who had lived in the area for decades. She and her 63-year-old son, Darrel Hurst, had just returned home from a grocery shopping trip when they encountered the gunman in their front yard. Both mother and son were fatally shot with a shotgun, their bodies later discovered by authorities near their residence. The violence also claimed the life of another neighbor, Susan Choucroun, who was shot in her driveway, as well as the initial couple, George and Anna Taylor, who succumbed to their injuries days after the attack.
Law enforcement launched an immediate manhunt for the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Brandon Howell. Hours after the shootings, police apprehended Howell walking along Interstate 29 in the Northland area. At the time of his arrest, he was found with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun concealed in his pant leg and keys to the stolen SUV in his pocket. The vehicle itself was located abandoned near a motel in Platte County. Prosecutors subsequently charged Howell with multiple felonies, eventually upgrading the counts to include five charges of first-degree murder following the deaths of all the victims.
The legal proceedings spanned several years, culminating in a trial in April 2019. A Jackson County jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning a guilty verdict on all counts, including five counts of first-degree murder, armed criminal action, burglary, and stealing. The defense did not call witnesses or present evidence during the trial. In May 2019, a judge sentenced Brandon Howell to five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would remain incarcerated for the remainder of his life.
