On the morning of March 16, 2020, officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 2700 block of Park Avenue following reports of a shooting. The call came in around 7:00 a.m., alerting authorities to a disturbance at the home. Upon arrival, first responders discovered 27-year-old Sammi Jo Weyer unresponsive inside the residence.
Emergency medical personnel transported her to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Investigators determined that Weyer, a resident of St. Joseph, Missouri, had been involved in a disturbance inside the home involving one or more individuals prior to the shooting. At the time of the incident, detectives worked to establish whether Weyer was a visitor or staying at the property, noting that understanding her presence there was key to determining the nature of the dispute. The Jackson County Medical Examiner's office was tasked with confirming the precise cause of death, which police investigated as a homicide resulting from an apparent gunshot wound.
Despite the initial investigation and the collection of evidence by crime scene technicians, no immediate arrests were reported in the aftermath of the killing. Weyer, a certified nursing assistant, was survived by her parents, siblings, and extended family, who held a memorial service in her honor in St. Joseph.
