In the early morning hours of June 25, 2023, just after celebrating his 22nd birthday, Nikko Manning, a Black male, was shot and killed in Kansas City, Missouri. The tragic incident unfolded around 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of 57th Street and Prospect Avenue, where a large gathering was taking place. Manning was with his mother, Nikkia Manning, at the time of the shooting. She had gone to her car to get a pair of flat shoes, and her son had accompanied her to ensure her safety.
While they were by the vehicle, gunfire erupted, and Nikko Manning was struck. His mother performed CPR on him until paramedics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting was a chaotic event that resulted in the deaths of two other individuals, 29-year-old Camden M. Brown and 28-year-old Jasity J. Strong, and left several others wounded. Police who responded to the scene found the victims in a parking lot and the street. The gathering has been described as an after-hours party at an auto shop. Family members described Nikko as a kind and loving person who had played football in high school, volunteered at a homeless shelter, and traveled to Jamaica to build homes for those in need.
In the days following the shooting, an arrest was made in connection with the homicides. Jackson County prosecutors charged 26-year-old Keivon M. Greene with three counts of second-degree murder and multiple counts of armed criminal action and first-degree assault. While one person has been charged, authorities indicated that the investigation was ongoing and that they were looking into other persons of interest. The motive for the shooting was reportedly an argument that escalated.
