On the evening of July 31, 2019, 23-year-old African American male Aaron G. Mason visited a Wendy's fast-food restaurant located at 3118 Main Street in the Midtown area of Kansas City, Missouri. While inside the establishment, a dispute arose between Mason and an employee working behind the counter. The nature of the verbal altercation escalated quickly, drawing the attention of other customers and staff members present in the dining area.
Witnesses reported that the confrontation intensified when Mason allegedly walked behind the service counter to directly confront the worker.
During the encounter behind the counter, the situation turned violent as both men reportedly brandished firearms. A rapid exchange of gunfire ensued within the confines of the restaurant workspace. Mason sustained gunshot wounds during the shootout and managed to flee from the immediate vicinity of the counter, running out the back of the restaurant before collapsing in the parking lot. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
In the chaotic aftermath of the shooting, the employee involved in the altercation fled the scene before law enforcement officers could arrive. Kansas City police investigators processed the restaurant for evidence and interviewed approximately a dozen witnesses who were inside during the incident. Authorities identified the employee as a person of interest and actively sought his whereabouts to obtain his account of the events, noting that while they had gathered physical evidence and witness statements, the employee's testimony was a critical missing piece of the investigation. The police publicly requested the worker to come forward, but immediate reports following the incident did not confirm an arrest or charges, leaving the investigation ongoing at that time.
