On July 1, 2020, police in Kansas City, Missouri, were called to the scene of a shooting near East 27th Street and Chestnut Avenue around 7:15 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of 28-year-old male Darren Marshall, who had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. Investigators located five spent shell casings near the victim in the 2700 block of 27th Street, and witnesses provided critical information regarding a potential suspect vehicle, described as a green Pontiac, fleeing the area.
Law enforcement officers subsequently spotted a vehicle matching the witness description near 27th Street and Prospect Avenue. When police attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over, sparking a high-speed pursuit. The chase saw the suspect vehicle disregarding traffic signals and reaching speeds of up to 85 mph as it fled toward the state line. The pursuit continued until officers were finally able to stop the vehicle in Kansas, where they took the driver into custody.
The suspect was identified as 36-year-old Eric Thomas. During the arrest, Thomas reportedly made a spontaneous statement to officers, claiming that someone had shot at him and he was returning fire, although he later denied making this admission. A search of his vehicle revealed a handgun, which forensic testing allegedly matched to the shell casings recovered near Marshall's body. Authorities noted that Thomas was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the stop.
Following the investigation, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office charged Eric Thomas with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and resisting arrest. Prosecutors requested a bond of $150,000. Court records indicated that Thomas was a convicted felon who had previously been found guilty of resisting arrest, a status that legally prohibited him from possessing a firearm.
