In the winter of 2016 in Kansas City, Missouri, the life of 15-year-old Jaiair Strong was tragically cut short. On the morning of Monday, February 15th, Jaiair, a student at Raytown High School and a talented basketball player with dreams of playing at a Division I school, was picked up from his home by other young people. Shortly after, he was fatally shot in the chest in east Kansas City, near U.S. 40 and Willow Road.
He was rushed to a hospital where he later died, becoming the city's 16th homicide victim of the year. His family described him as a well-liked and smart young man who had been playing basketball since he was five years old.
The investigation into Jaiair’s death revealed a complex and tragic story of a planned robbery gone wrong. According to court records and witness statements, Jaiair and another teenager, 15-year-old Demarco J. Summers, had gone to an apartment on East 39th Terrace with the intention of robbing another juvenile of a handgun. They had reportedly told others they were going to buy marijuana. During a struggle over the weapon between Jaiair and the juvenile who possessed the gun, Jaiair was shot. In the chaotic aftermath, Summers reportedly fled the scene in a stolen vehicle.
In the months that followed, legal proceedings began to unfold. A 15-year-old, whose name was not released because he was a juvenile, was charged with second-degree murder and tampering in connection with Jaiair's death. A judge later ruled that this individual would not be tried as an adult, and his case remained in the family court system. Demarco J. Summers, on the other hand, was certified to be charged as an adult. He faced charges of first-degree robbery and armed criminal action related to the incident that led to Jaiair’s death. Summers was also implicated in a separate incident that occurred in March of the same year, involving shots being fired into a vehicle near Central High School.
