On the evening of July 1, 2023, law enforcement officers in Kansas City, Missouri, were dispatched to the Fairway Hills neighborhood following reports of a shooting. The incident occurred in the 5300 block of Westridge Road on the city’s East Side. Upon arrival at the residence, police discovered a male victim inside the home suffering from gunshot wounds.
First responders transported him to a local hospital for emergency treatment, but he was subsequently declared dead.
The victim was identified as Tyler Dontrielle Ashley, a 26-year-old Black male who had grown up in the area. Born to parents Bobby Davis and Amber Potter, Ashley was a graduate of Central High School in Kansas City. Following the initial response, the investigation continued for several months before the medical examiner’s office officially ruled the death a homicide in September 2023.
Regarding the investigation into those responsible, Kansas City police later announced that a suspect had been identified in connection with the killing. However, at the time of that announcement, authorities did not clarify whether the individual was in custody, nor did they publicly release the suspect's name or file formal charges in the immediate aftermath of the ruling. The case was recorded as one of over 130 homicides in the city that year.
