In the small city of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Brian Dene Runnels was a man known for his infectious smile and love for life. A Black/African American male, he was a star athlete in his youth, excelling in football, baseball, and basketball, which earned him the nickname "Flying Brian." After graduating from Carlsbad High School in 1991, he continued his baseball career with a scholarship to New Mexico Junior College and later attended Abilene Christian University.
His love for sports continued into adulthood as he played for the semi-pro football team, The Regulators, and was a passionate fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He was an active member of his community, working various jobs including for the CARC Farm, The Connections, teaching and coaching at local schools, and most recently at Superior Water. He was a member of the New San Jose Church of Christ and was known for his generosity and willingness to help others.
The vibrant life of 42-year-old Brian Runnels came to an abrupt and mysterious end in the fall of 2014. He was last seen on or about October 16, 2014, and then seemingly vanished without a trace. For years, his disappearance remained a painful mystery for his family and the Carlsbad community. The uncertainty was a heavy burden, leaving his loved ones to wonder what had become of the fun-loving man who was known to call everyone "Cletus or Elroy." The hope of his safe return dwindled with each passing year, replaced by a growing sense of dread.
A grim discovery on April 22, 2020, finally brought a devastating answer to the long-unanswered questions. Skeletal remains found near the George Shoup Relief Route were identified as those of Brian Runnels, confirming he had been murdered. The case, which had grown cold, was now an active homicide investigation. Just two days after the discovery of his remains, a significant breakthrough occurred when authorities arrested Brett J. Roark. He was charged with murder and tampering with evidence in connection with Runnels' death.
During the investigation, Roark provided a chilling account of Runnels' final moments. He alleged that another man, who has not been publicly identified, was responsible for shooting Runnels in the chest at Runnels' home. Roark admitted to his involvement in the aftermath, stating that he assisted in disposing of the body and cleaning the crime scene. While Roark awaits trial, the full story of that tragic day in October 2014 remains partially obscured, with a second potential suspect yet to be charged. The community continues to mourn the loss of a man remembered for his radiant smile and the light he brought into the lives of those who knew him.
