On August 19, 2017, a homicide occurred in the area of Six Mile Dam near Carlsbad, New Mexico, resulting in the death of 38-year-old Mario Hector Acosta Jr. from Portales, New Mexico. Deputies with the Eddy County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene at approximately 0800 hours, where they found Acosta unconscious and not breathing. Upon investigation, it was determined that Acosta had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to various areas of his body.
