Keith Riley, a 34-year-old White male from the Carlsbad, New Mexico area, died on April 23, 2015, after a shooting in Eddy County near Whites City. What first emerged publicly was a grim and uncertain scene: deputies were called to a motel room, where Riley was found dead. In the beginning, the case carried the cold, unresolved feel of an unattended death investigation, with law enforcement trying to piece together what had happened inside that room and in the hours leading up to it.
