On the evening of October 10, 2021, the life of 22-year-old Eduardo Otero Jr. was tragically cut short in Carlsbad, New Mexico. The young man, a male of Hispanic ethnicity, was the victim of a fatal shooting that would leave a community seeking answers and justice. The events of that night unfolded on the 600 block of North Mesquite, where officers from the Carlsbad Police Department were dispatched following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Otero Jr.
suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
In the wake of the shooting, the Carlsbad Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the death of Eduardo Otero Jr., which was quickly classified as a homicide. As detectives pieced together the evidence and witness statements, two individuals emerged as the primary suspects in the case. The police identified Gabriel Rodriguez and Alfredo Tornabene, who is also known by the aliases "Eay Jay" or "Apple Jacs," as the men they were searching for in connection with the fatal shooting. The search for the two suspects would stretch on for weeks, extending beyond the borders of New Mexico.
The first significant breakthrough in the case came on December 26, 2021. Acting on information that one of the fugitives was in the Midland, Texas area, the United States Marshal's Service, in conjunction with the Midland County Sheriff's Office, located Gabriel Rodriguez Jr. He was found in the 600 block of East County Road 129 in Midland County. Rodriguez was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Midland County Jail. He was wanted on charges of Aggravated Robbery and the Murder of Eduardo Otero Jr.
While the arrest of Gabriel Rodriguez marked a major step forward in the investigation, the search for the second suspect, Alfredo Tornabene, continued. Information regarding his potential whereabouts or whether he has been apprehended remains less clear in the immediate aftermath of the initial investigation and Rodriguez's capture.
