In the city of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, a young woman named KeMari Childress, age 17, was building a life full of promise. Having recently graduated from Central Academy High School in December 2023, she was working as a pharmacy technician at a local CVS, with aspirations of one day becoming a licensed pharmacist. Friends and family remembered her as a loving, caring, and hardworking person with a beautiful smile, who was looking forward to celebrating her 18th birthday in March.
Her life, however, was tragically cut short on the afternoon of February 27, 2024.
On that Tuesday, while at her job, a confrontation began in the CVS parking lot. KeMari was seen arguing with three individuals in a red car, one of whom was her 20-year-old ex-boyfriend, Tre'marion Jones. The argument escalated, and as KeMari attempted to get into her own car and leave, Jones exited the red vehicle and opened fire. Surveillance footage captured the harrowing moments as KeMari tried to run for her life before being struck by the gunfire and collapsing in the parking lot. The shooting, which occurred around 2:30 p.m., also resulted in a 53-year-old construction worker at a nearby site being shot in the hip; his injuries were not life-threatening. KeMari was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify Jones as a person of interest. Later that evening, around 8 p.m., police located a vehicle believed to be connected to the suspect. When officers attempted to pull the car over, the driver sped off, leading to a brief chase that ended when the vehicle stopped and three occupants fled on foot. Police managed to apprehend two of the individuals: Tre'marion Jones and 20-year-old Jamius Smith. A third person, 21-year-old Yonique Kane, was arrested a short time later. Investigators discovered that about 10 minutes after the shooting, Kane had returned to the active crime scene, ducked under the police tape, and retrieved a cell phone from the ground, which she later admitted belonged to Jones.
Tre'marion Jones was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree assault for the injury to the second victim, and resisting arrest. Jamius Smith faced charges of hindering prosecution and resisting a lawful stop, while Yonique Kane was charged with tampering with physical evidence. All three suspects were held without bond. During his initial court appearances, Jones entered a plea of not guilty to all charges and was assigned a public defender. The case against him and his co-defendants is ongoing.
