On March 10, 2024, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Kansas City police responded to a shooting at a Phillips 66 gas station in the 4800 block of Independence Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found 37-year-old Nicholas Lewis unresponsive in the parking lot; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Inside the convenience store, they discovered 34-year-old Reginald McGee with critical gunshot wounds; he was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
