A routine morning commute in Kansas City, Missouri, on November 12, 2014, turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 45-year-old Jai T. Scott. The incident unfolded near City Hall, at 11th and Oak streets, shortly after Scott had dropped his wife off at her job in the city's business license office. An argument between Scott and another man escalated into a physical altercation, culminating in a fatal shooting.
The conflict reportedly began when a man, later identified as
24-year-old Rickey C. Battee, kicked Scott's car as he drove by. Scott then exited his vehicle, and a fight ensued. Surveillance footage from a metro bus captured the tragic moments that followed, showing Battee producing a handgun and shooting Scott as he walked south on Oak Street. Nearby police officers heard the gunshots and responded quickly. While some officers administered first aid to Scott, others pursued and apprehended Battee.
Scott was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries during surgery. Within hours of the shooting, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office announced charges against Rickey C. Battee. He was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000. Scott was remembered as a husband and an employee of the Salvation Army's Adult Rehabilitation Center.
