On the night of November 15, 2019, violence erupted outside the Cloud 9 Liquor Store located at 7510 East 87th Street in Kansas City, Missouri, resulting in the tragic death of 38-year-old Gerald D. Berry Jr., a Black male resident of the area. The incident began shortly before midnight when Berry, who was at the location with a relative, encountered 31-year-old Jhermeil R. Taylor. Witnesses and surveillance footage indicated that an argument broke out between Taylor and Berry's cousin.
In an effort to defuse the escalating tension, Berry reportedly raised his hand to intervene and calm the situation. The confrontation turned physical when a punch was thrown, leading Taylor to draw a firearm and discharge it, striking Berry. Although Berry attempted to defend himself by returning fire, he sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.
Investigators with the Kansas City Police Department utilized surveillance video from the liquor store to identify the shooter. The footage captured a man in a yellow sweatshirt, later confirmed to be Taylor, engaging in the dispute before the shooting occurred. Following the release of images of the person of interest, authorities were able to locate and arrest Taylor. In December 2019, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Taylor was subsequently booked into the Jackson County Jail, where he was held on a $250,000 bond while awaiting trial.
The legal proceedings continued for several years as the case moved through the court system. In August 2022, nearly three years after the fatal altercation, a resolution was reached in the case against the shooter. Jhermeil R. Taylor pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter for his role in ending Berry's life. The plea deal concluded the criminal prosecution, bringing a legal close to the investigation into the events that unfolded in the liquor store parking lot that November night.
