On October 17, 2022, a welfare check at a south Kansas City apartment in the 8700 block of Chestnut Circle led to a grim discovery and the beginning of a double homicide investigation. Inside the Santa Fe Hills neighborhood apartment, police found the bodies of 26-year-old Austin Scott, a male, and his 33-year-old cousin, Chantell Gipson. Both victims were suffering from apparent trauma and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The deaths were quickly classified as homicides, marking the 135th and 136th in Kansas City for the year.
Concern had grown after a neighbor noticed mail and packages accumulating at the apartment's door, prompting the call to law enforcement. Upon entering, police discovered the two cousins in separate bedrooms, both having been fatally shot.
The investigation soon focused on Glenn A. Pulluaim II, who was identified as Gipson's boyfriend. In December 2022, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office announced that Pulluaim, 28, had been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with the deaths of Scott and Gipson. Evidence linking Pulluaim to the crime scene included his DNA profile found on spent shell casings recovered from the apartment.
Following the announcement of the charges, authorities began searching for Pulluaim, considering him armed and dangerous. Later that month, he turned himself in to the authorities. Pulluaim had a prior criminal history, having previously been convicted of voluntary manslaughter for a 2013 double homicide for which he served seven years in prison before being released in 2020.
