In December of 2020, a heart-wrenching story began to unfold in Greensboro, North Carolina, with the disappearance of infant Neveah Renee Smith. Just a baby, Neveah was last seen on December 20, 2020. At the time she vanished, she was described as a Black female with short, curly black hair and brown eyes. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance were immediately concerning, as she was last seen with her mother, Deneshia Lerhae Murray, and her mother's boyfriend, Jalen Maurice Wall, traveling in a vehicle heading west from Greensboro.
The case took a devastating turn when authorities began investigating Neveah's disappearance in March 2021. Information gathered during the investigation led detectives to the grim conclusion that the child was deceased. This led to the arrests of both Murray and Wall on charges of felony conceal/fail to report the death of a child. Murray was released after posting bond, while Wall remained in custody. The investigation pressed on, with law enforcement from multiple agencies working to uncover the truth and locate the infant's remains.
As the investigation continued, more disturbing details emerged. Both Deneshia Murray and Jalen Wall were subsequently charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury in connection with Neveah's death. Court documents revealed horrific allegations that Wall had beaten the six-month-old to death and that her body was left along a highway. Prosecutors stated that after the child's murder, the couple traveled to Nevada. During court proceedings, Neveah's paternal grandmother and other family members were present, wearing shirts with her smiling face, a loving tribute to the baby they called 'Muff Muff.' Despite the serious charges and the ongoing investigation, Neveah's body has not been found, leaving her family and the community with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss.
