In the early morning hours of Friday, March 22, 2024, a sense of unease settled over the Foxtown East neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri. The day was just beginning when the sound of gunfire shattered the morning quiet near the intersection of East 67th Street and Cleveland Avenue, on the fringe of Swope Park. Responding to calls, police officers arrived at the scene shortly after 8 a.m. to a grim discovery.
In a parking lot adjacent to a local business, they found a young man suffering from gunshot wounds.
The victim was identified as 25-year-old Donte A. Sims, a male resident of the city. Emergency medical personnel worked quickly to provide aid, rushing him to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, Sims succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The initial investigation revealed that he had been across the street from the Freeway Market when he was shot.
Detectives and crime scene investigators descended on the area, cordoning it off to collect evidence and search for any potential witnesses to the tragic event.
