On a tragic Saturday evening in Kansas City, Missouri, a minor traffic incident escalated into a fatal burst of violence that claimed the life of 64-year-old Joseph Smith, a Black male. The altercation, which occurred on March 6, 2021, also resulted in the deaths of two other men, Curtis Thompkins, 33, and Gregory Harper, 41. The chain of events began with a fender bender in the 5000 block of Agnes Avenue, which quickly devolved into a heated disturbance.
The verbal confrontation took a
dark turn when gunfire erupted. Kansas City Police were called to the scene at approximately 8:40 p.m. for an outdoor disturbance, a call that was soon upgraded to a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene in front of a residence just north of East 51st Street and Agnes Avenue. Joseph Smith and Curtis Thompkins were found unresponsive, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. A short distance away, authorities located Gregory Harper, who had also been shot. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
