In the early hours of a Monday morning in Baltimore, a life was tragically cut short, leaving a community in mourning and a family shattered. Thirty-year-old Marco Nunez, a male bouncer known for his warm smile and protective nature, was working in the historic Fells Point neighborhood on April 25, 2022. He was a father and a beloved figure at Rodos Bar, where he was employed to ensure the safety of its patrons.
That night, an altercation erupted between two groups of people on the 1700
block of Thames Street. True to his character, Nunez stepped in to de-escalate the situation, attempting to bring peace to the escalating conflict. It was in this moment of intervention that gunfire rang out, and Nunez was struck by multiple bullets. Despite the proximity of police officers, the shooter managed to flee the scene. Nunez was rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead. His death sent shockwaves through the Fells Point community, where friends and patrons created a makeshift memorial of flowers and candles in his honor.
The Baltimore Police Department immediately launched an investigation, releasing images of several persons of interest and appealing to the public for information. Their efforts, aided by community cooperation, quickly yielded a breakthrough. Just over a week later, on May 4, 2022, a 16-year-old male named Robert Jordan was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. He was subsequently charged as an adult with first-degree murder.
In May 2023, the case reached a significant turning point when Robert Jordan, then 18, accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder and firearm use in a felony or violent crime. The prosecution offered a sentence of 60 years, with all but 20 years suspended, for the murder charge, along with a consecutive five-year sentence for the firearm offense. As part of the agreement, it was recommended that Jordan serve his time at the Patuxent Institution, a treatment-oriented correctional facility. While the legal proceedings brought a measure of closure, for the family of Marco Nunez, the arrest and conviction could not bring back the man they loved.
