On March 30, 2018, a violent altercation unfolded in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of forty-five-year-old Virgil Marshall. The incident began near Euclid Avenue and 30th Street, where Marshall, a Black male, had met with nineteen-year-old Damyon D. Cook. The meeting, intended to be a transaction involving the sale of drugs, deteriorated when Marshall decided to back out of the deal.
The refusal antagonized Cook, leading to a physical struggle between the two men.
During the fight, Marshall managed to gain control of Cook's handgun. However, witnesses later reported that Marshall was unable to remove the magazine from the weapon due to an intoxicated state. Instead of using the weapon, he returned it to Cook. The two men then exchanged apologies and verbally agreed to a truce. Believing the conflict was resolved, Marshall turned his back to walk away. At that moment, Cook raised the weapon and fired multiple times, striking Marshall in the back.
Police officers responding to the sound of gunfire arrived to find Marshall lying on the ground near the intersection, critically wounded but still conscious. He was able to speak to the officers, confirming that the man in a fleeing Jeep was the one who had shot him. Marshall was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, officers pursued the suspect vehicle, engaging in a chase that ended near 26th Street and Indiana Avenue. Cook attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended and taken into custody.
Prosecutors in Jackson County charged Cook with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and resisting arrest. He was held on a $250,000 bond. The legal proceedings eventually resulted in a conviction that led to his incarceration. By early 2023, Cook had been released from prison and was on parole for the 2018 homicide of Marshall, fitted with a GPS ankle monitor as a condition of his release.
In February 2023, while still on parole for Marshall's death, Cook became the primary suspect in a new double homicide. Authorities alleged that he allowed his ankle monitor to lose its charge to evade tracking before traveling to a residence in Kansas City's East Community Team South neighborhood. There, he allegedly shot and killed two people and wounded a third during another narcotics-related dispute. Following this subsequent incident, Cook was arrested again and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and multiple other felonies.
