In the spring of 2018, Charles Wofford, a 57-year-old male, was looking forward to a Memorial Day weekend filled with the friendly company and laughter that often filled his Kansas City, Missouri, home. He had set out new cushions on his patio furniture in preparation for guests with whom he planned to watch the NBA playoffs and enjoy games of pool in his basement.
