In a tragic turn of events that shattered a family, 38-year-old Domonique A. McGeachy, a Black female, was found dead in her Kansas City, Missouri, home on April 1, 2024. A loving mother and a U.S. Army veteran who served as a nurse, her life was cut short in an apparent murder-suicide. Concern arose when Domonique failed to arrive at her job at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
This prompted a family member to request a welfare check at her residence in the 8300 block of NW 90th Street.
Upon entering the home, police officers discovered a heartbreaking scene. Domonique and her 12-year-old son, Jerel D. McGeachy Jr., had both been fatally shot. The investigation determined their deaths were homicides. The body of Domonique's husband and Jerel Jr.'s father, 38-year-old Jerel D. McGeachy Sr., was also found inside the home. Investigators concluded that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and that he was the sole perpetrator of the violence.
Further investigation into the circumstances leading to the tragedy revealed a history of turmoil. Jerel McGeachy Sr., a police officer for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, had been served with a protective order just days before the killings, which prohibited him from possessing a firearm. Despite this, he managed to access his service weapon from a VA facility in Leavenworth. An investigation by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel later found that management at the VA police department failed to follow established procedures by not revoking his access to the armory. In the wake of the devastating loss, Domonique's mother filed a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit against the federal government, alleging that the tragedy could have been prevented.
