On a Friday afternoon, September 27, 2019, the life of 29-year-old Charles Alsobrooks was tragically cut short in Griffin, Georgia. An African American male, Alsobrooks was in the 400 block of North 8th Street when he was shot multiple times. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 2 p.m. and transported him to Wellstar Spalding Regional Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Remembered as a devoted father to two young daughters, his death deeply impacted the Griffin community, leaving family and friends to grieve his sudden and violent loss.
The Griffin Police Department quickly identified 23-year-old David Blalock Jr. as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting. A manhunt ensued for Blalock Jr., who was considered armed and dangerous. In a complicating turn of events, the suspect's father, 41-year-old David Blalock Sr., was also implicated. The day after the shooting, Blalock Sr. turned himself in to the authorities. He faced charges of felony hindering the apprehension of a criminal and tampering with evidence for allegedly helping his son evade capture.
After being on the run for nearly a week, David Blalock Jr. surrendered to the Griffin Police Department on October 3, 2019. He was subsequently booked into the Spalding County Jail on charges including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Later, a grand jury indicted him on charges of malice murder and felony murder. His father, David Blalock Sr., was indicted on charges of hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. While awaiting trial, David Blalock Jr. faced additional charges in Fayette County after he allegedly attacked a detention officer.
