In the quiet town of Griffin, Georgia, the life of 40-year-old Johnny Whitlock, a Black male, was tragically cut short on the evening of October 7, 2020. At approximately 7:00 p.m., police responded to a call at Whitlock's residence on Ellis Road and found him with a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to Spalding Wellstar Hospital, but the injury proved fatal, and he died shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to a suspect,
25-year-old Renita Maxine Thomas. Initially, Thomas claimed that Whitlock had taken his own life. However, the evidence gathered by the Griffin Police Department pointed to a different story, indicating that Thomas was holding the weapon when it discharged. She was subsequently arrested and faced a series of charges, including involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and pointing a gun at another person.
Thomas was taken into custody and booked into the Spalding County Jail without bond. The legal proceedings that followed culminated in a significant development in March 2023. Renita Thomas pleaded guilty to the charge of voluntary manslaughter. As a result of her plea, she was sentenced to a term of 20 years, with the first 15 years to be served in prison. Following her sentencing, she was transferred to Arrendale State Prison to begin serving her time.
