On May 18, 2024, police officers in Kansas City, Missouri, responded to a disturbance in the Volker neighborhood that resulted in the death of 22-year-old K’yiel Collins-Phillips. The incident occurred in the 3400 block of Wyoming Street near the Woodbridge Apartments, where officers were initially dispatched following reports regarding a recovered stolen vehicle.
Upon arrival, the call was upgraded to a shooting, and first responders discovered the male victim suffering from gunshot wounds to his head and back. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that two suspects, identified as Charles Harrison Sr., 76, and his son, Charles Harrison Jr., 55, had traveled to the apartment complex searching for a Dodge Charger Hellcat that had been reported stolen from Raytown earlier that day. Driving a black Toyota Camry, the pair located the missing vehicle and encountered Collins-Phillips along with other individuals. According to court documents, the confrontation escalated into violence. Harrison Jr. admitted to firing a weapon from inside the vehicle, while Harrison Sr. was accused of driving the Camry into the victim. Although the father claimed he accelerated accidentally while ducking from incoming gunfire, surveillance footage reportedly showed the victim with his empty hands raised in the air at the moment he was struck by the car.
Following the incident, prosecutors charged both men in connection with the violence. Charles Harrison Jr. faced charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. His father, Charles Harrison Sr., was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. Law enforcement authorities noted that a third subject was also taken into custody at the scene, though their identity was not immediately released to the public. As of the initial court proceedings, bond for the elder Harrison was set at $100,000.
