In Independence, Missouri, a tragic sequence of events unfolded on November 7, 2024, resulting in the death of two-month-old Destinii Hope and her thirty-four-year-old mother, Maria Pike. The incident began when police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at the Oval Spring Apartments. The call was placed by Talisa Coombs, Destinii’s grandmother, who reported that she had been assaulted by Pike.
Officers arrived at the apartment complex and eventually made contact with Pike, who had retreated into a closet with her infant daughter.
Body camera footage from the encounter showed Pike emerging from the closet while holding Destinii Hope in her arms. She moved to a bed in the room, where the situation rapidly escalated. According to police accounts and released video, Pike grabbed a knife from a nearby nightstand and raised it while moving toward the officers. In response to the perceived threat, an Independence police officer fired his weapon. The gunfire struck both Maria Pike and the infant she was holding. Destinii Hope was shot in the head, and both mother and daughter succumbed to their injuries.
Following the shooting, an investigation was launched into the use of deadly force. The officers involved were identified in a subsequent civil lawsuit as Jordan White and Chad Cox. The case was reviewed by Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson to determine if criminal charges were warranted. After examining the evidence, including the body camera footage, the prosecutor’s office declined to file charges against the officer who fired the fatal shots. The decision was based on Missouri law, with the prosecutor stating that the officer reasonably believed he was in imminent danger, justifying the use of lethal force.
Despite the decision not to pursue criminal charges, the family of Destinii Hope and Maria Pike sought accountability through the civil justice system. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against the officers involved, alleging negligence and arguing that the situation was a mental health crisis that should have been de-escalated rather than met with deadly force. The family and community members held vigils and protests, questioning why alternative measures were not used to preserve the life of the infant and her mother.
