On November 7, 2024, in Independence, Missouri, 34-year-old Maria Pike and her two-month-old daughter, Destinii Hope, were fatally shot by a police officer responding to a domestic disturbance call. The incident began when Pike's mother, Talisa Coombs, visited the apartment to check on her granddaughter's well-being. A physical altercation ensued between Coombs and Pike, prompting Coombs to contact the police for assistance.
