In the late afternoon of a Thursday in East Orange, New Jersey, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace on the 100 block of Steuben Street. When police responded to reports of shots fired at 2:44 p.m. on June 1, 2023, they discovered 39-year-old Omar Johnson-Pilgrim of Newark suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to University Hospital in Newark, but his injuries were too severe.
Johnson-Pilgrim was pronounced dead at 3:52 p.m.
Witnesses at the scene described a brazen and violent attack. An armed individual, reportedly riding a scooter, pulled up alongside the vehicle Johnson-Pilgrim was in and opened fire, shooting him multiple times before fleeing. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with the East Orange Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
As of the days following the incident, the investigation was declared active and ongoing. Law enforcement officials have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the killing of Omar Johnson-Pilgrim.
