In the late afternoon of a Thursday in East Orange, New Jersey, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace on the 100 block of Steuben Street. When police responded to reports of shots fired at 2:44 p.m. on June 1, 2023, they discovered 39-year-old Omar Johnson-Pilgrim of Newark suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to University Hospital in Newark, but his injuries were too severe. Johnson-Pilgrim was pronounced dead at 3:52 p.m.
