In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in East Orange, New Jersey, tragedy struck a 17-year-old male named Tyjid Campbell. On May 6, 2015, the young Black / African American man was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on Mountainview Avenue. Shortly after 11 p.m., the night was shattered by the sound of gunfire, and both occupants of the car were hit.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the grave situation.
Tyjid Campbell, suffering from gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead right there in the passenger seat. The driver of the vehicle was also injured in the shooting and was quickly transported to University Hospital in Newark for medical attention. The identity of the driver was not publicly released by authorities at the time.
In the immediate aftermath, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force began an investigation into the double shooting. They appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an understanding of what happened and who was responsible. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, information regarding any potential suspects or arrests in the case has remained elusive over the years. The violent incident that cut Tyjid Campbell's life short remains a somber chapter in the community's history, with the search for justice continuing.
