In the early hours of New Year's Day 2019, the life of 18-year-old Ibn Downey of Newark, New Jersey, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in East Orange. The incident, which marked the first homicide of the year in New Jersey, unfolded around 12:45 a.m. near 178 North 17th Street. Downey, a male, was a member of the founding class of the Eagle Academy for Young Men of Newark and was remembered as a friendly and family-oriented individual with an 'independent spirit'.
Responding
to reports of gunfire, East Orange police officers discovered Downey at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at 1:06 a.m. A second victim, an 18-year-old female, was also found to have sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the East Orange Police Department launched a joint investigation into the shooting. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with Downey's death. The investigation remains ongoing, and law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information to come forward. An Islamic funeral service was held for Downey on January 8, 2019, at the Chapels of Eden Funeral Home in East Orange.
