In the early hours of New Year's Day 2019, the life of 18-year-old Ibn Downey of Newark, New Jersey, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in East Orange. The incident, which marked the first homicide of the year in New Jersey, unfolded around 12:45 a.m. near 178 North 17th Street. Downey, a male, was a member of the founding class of the Eagle Academy for Young Men of Newark and was remembered as a friendly and family-oriented individual with an 'independent spirit'.
