In the early morning hours of Friday, June 3, 2022, the life of 37-year-old Melja T. Oliver of East Orange, New Jersey, was tragically cut short. At approximately 12:51 a.m., police were called to the 500 block of Main Street, where they discovered Oliver on the sidewalk, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Hospital in Newark but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:31 a.m.
The investigation into the shooting, a joint effort by the Essex County
Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and the East Orange Police Department, quickly led to a suspect. Five days later, on June 8, Darienne Murray, a 35-year-old man from the neighboring city of Orange, was arrested. Murray was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
During the investigation, detectives found no evidence to suggest that Murray and Oliver had known each other before the fatal encounter. The shooting occurred outside a ShopRite supermarket on Main Street. It was revealed that Murray confronted Oliver on the side of the building, produced a handgun, and shot him in the head.
In October 2024, after a three-week trial, an Essex County jury convicted Darienne Murray on all charges related to the murder of Melja Oliver. The jury deliberated for just over an hour before reaching its guilty verdict. Murray faces a sentence of up to life in prison, with a mandatory minimum of 30 years to be served before the possibility of parole. His sentencing was scheduled for January 6, 2025. Those who knew Melja Oliver remembered him as a father, uncle, and brother, whose family suffered a devastating loss.
