In the early morning hours of May 1, 2021, the life of 34-year-old Shakur Robinson of Newark was tragically cut short when he was fatally shot inside a residence on the 500 block of South Clinton Street in East Orange, New Jersey. The incident, which took place at what some residents described as a popular after-hours establishment, unfolded around 3:30 a.m. when East Orange Police responded to reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Robinson in the basement of the home with a gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shakur Robinson, a father of two and a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 210, was reportedly at the alleged speakeasy with a female acquaintance and a few other people. According to sources close to the investigation, a male suspect who was also present left the location and returned shortly after with a firearm. It is reported that there was minimal interaction between the suspect and Robinson before the fatal shot was fired. The assailant then fled the scene.

The investigation into the homicide was conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and the East Orange Police Department. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of a suspect. A few days after the shooting, on May 4, 2021, authorities announced the arrest of 35-year-old Terrance Nelson of Newark. Nelson was charged with murder, illegal possession of a weapon, and being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon. The investigation remained active and ongoing following the arrest.
