In the fall of 2020, a gathering in an apartment on Lincoln Street in East Orange, New Jersey, took a tragic and violent turn, ending the life of 22-year-old Daimeir Nelson. On the evening of October 27, 2020, Nelson was attending a party when another attendee, 34-year-old Jashon Allen, was ejected from the residence. In a senseless act of violence, Allen returned to the apartment and, when the door was reopened, he fired a gun into the doorway, fatally striking Nelson in the chest.
Responding to reports of shots fired at approximately 9:35 p.m., East Orange Police officers arrived at the scene to find Nelson unconscious and suffering from severe injuries. He was pronounced dead a short time later. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with the East Orange Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. The suspect had fled the scene immediately after the incident.
The investigation led to the arrest of Jashon Allen, an ex-convict. He was charged with aggravated manslaughter and unlawful possession of a handgun without a permit. In November 2022, Allen pleaded guilty to the charges. On February 17, 2023, he was sentenced to 28 years in state prison. Under the terms of his sentence, Allen is required to serve 85 percent of his term before being eligible for parole. This was not Allen's first gun-related offense; he had a previous conviction in 2016 for unlawfully possessing a handgun.
