In the late evening hours of September 9, 2023, the life of 31-year-old Alberto DeJesus, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short on the streets of Camden, New Jersey. Known affectionately as 'Goldo,' DeJesus was working as a local cab driver when he picked up a passenger on the 1700 block of South 9th Street in the Liberty Park neighborhood.
The ride would prove to be his last.
During the short trip, the passenger allegedly shot DeJesus near the intersection of Norris and Furman streets. Despite being gravely wounded, DeJesus managed to continue driving for a few blocks before his vehicle crashed into a utility pole at Norris Street and Lansdowne Avenue. When Camden County Police Department officers responded to the scene of the crash at approximately 11:45 p.m., they found DeJesus inside his vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene just before midnight.
The investigation into the death of Alberto DeJesus led authorities to 32-year-old Camden resident Jaffar Muhammad. On December 5, 2023, Muhammad was charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses in connection with DeJesus's death. At the time the charges were filed, Muhammad was already incarcerated at the Camden County Correctional Facility on unrelated weapons charges. Investigators were able to link Muhammad to the crime through ballistics evidence; a ghost gun found in his possession was matched to the shell casings recovered from DeJesus's cab.
