In the early morning hours of October 17, 2022, the life of 31-year-old Darryl Whichard, a Black male from Philadelphia, was tragically cut short in Camden, New Jersey. At approximately 3:32 a.m., officers from the Camden County Metro Police Department were dispatched to the 1800 block of Davis Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Whichard on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was promptly transported to Cooper University Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, he was pronounced dead later that morning at around 10:24 a.m.
The investigation into the homicide was swiftly undertaken by detectives from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit and the Camden County Police Homicide Unit. Their collaborative efforts quickly led to the identification of two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation culminated in the arrests of 38-year-old Dominique Bowman of Lindenwold, New Jersey, and 18-year-old Jamel Granger of Clementon, New Jersey.
Bowman was apprehended in Lindenwold by Camden City detectives on October 18, 2022, just a day after the shooting. The following day, on October 19, Granger was also arrested in Lindenwold by the U.S. Marshals Regional Task Force. Both men were charged with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Following their arrests, Bowman and Granger were lodged in the Camden County Correctional Facility to await further legal proceedings.
