On a tragic Tuesday morning in Camden, New Jersey, a young White boy's life was cut short in a senseless act of violence. Eight-year-old John Wilson, a male resident of the area, was caught in a deadly rampage that unfolded on September 6, 1949. He was in a car with his mother, Helen Wilson, and grandmother, Emma Matlack, when they were targeted by a lone gunman.
The two women were killed instantly at the scene, while John was critically wounded.
The harrowing event was part of a twelve-minute shooting spree that terrorized the Cramer Hill neighborhood. The perpetrator, 28-year-old World War II veteran Howard Unruh, walked the streets of his community, indiscriminately firing a Luger pistol at his neighbors. In this short span, he would claim the lives of thirteen people and injure three others in what became known as the "Walk of Death." Young John Wilson was rushed to Cooper Hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries, becoming the thirteenth and final victim of the massacre.
The shooter, Howard Unruh, was apprehended by police after a standoff at his apartment. During interrogation, he gave a meticulous account of his actions. Charges were filed against him for thirteen counts of willful and malicious slaying. However, Unruh was ultimately diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial. He was confined to a state psychiatric hospital for the remainder of his life and was never prosecuted for the murders. Unruh died in confinement in 2009 after spending sixty years institutionalized.
