In the late hours of an April evening, the sound of gunfire shattered the night in a Newark, New Jersey neighborhood. On April 10, 2024, in the 200 block of Nye Avenue, 19-year-old Al-quanim Za-quil Horne, a Black / African American male, was struck by multiple bullets. The attack was swift and brutal, with reports indicating that the assailant discharged over a dozen rounds in his direction before vanishing into the darkness.
Newark police officers responded to the scene at
approximately 10:05 p.m. to find Horne gravely wounded. Emergency services rushed him to University Hospital, but his injuries were too severe. A short time later, at 10:36 p.m., he was pronounced dead, leaving a community in shock and a family to grapple with a sudden and violent loss.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken the lead in the investigation into the homicide of Al-quanim Za-quil Horne. Despite their efforts, the case remains unsolved. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. The investigation is considered active and ongoing, with law enforcement continuing to seek information from the public that could lead to a breakthrough in the case and bring justice for the teenager whose life was cut tragically short.
