On the afternoon of October 1, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace at the Georgia King Village housing complex in Newark, New Jersey. When the sound of the shots subsided, a 22-year-old male named Khalil Mosby of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident was reported to Newark patrol officers at approximately 5:11 p.m., who were promptly dispatched to the scene.
Emergency services transported Mosby to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 5:41 p.m.
The investigation into the death of Khalil Mosby was immediately launched by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which included detectives from the Newark Police Department. For a time, the case remained active and ongoing with no arrests made, and authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the capture of those responsible for the young man's death. The investigation eventually led to a significant breakthrough with the apprehension of two Newark residents, Nrik Dunlap and Quasim A. Daniels.
Initially, both Dunlap and Daniels were charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Mosby's death. However, as the case proceeded through the legal system, both men opted to plead guilty to a lesser charge of conspiracy to commit murder. The Honorable Superior Court Judge Ronald D. Wigler presided over the case, and a sentencing date was scheduled for September 18, 2023. While the plea deal brought a form of resolution to the case, the identity of the person who actually fired the shots that killed Khalil Mosby was not publicly released.
