The life of Vincent J. Anderson, a 60-year-old Black man from New York City, was cut short on a Sunday afternoon in Newark, New Jersey. On October 22, 2023, at approximately 3:55 p.m., Newark police responded to reports of gunfire on the 300 block of Renner Avenue in the city's South Ward. Arriving officers found Anderson outside, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate arrival of medical assistance, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:11 p.m.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force launched an investigation that quickly identified a suspect, 32-year-old Antwine King. Investigators determined that King had fled New Jersey after the shooting. Less than a week later, on October 28, 2023, authorities tracked him to a Greyhound bus station in Laredo, Texas, where he was taken into custody.
King was charged with the murder of Vincent Anderson and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. At the time of his apprehension in Texas, authorities also found him to be in possession of crack cocaine. He was extradited to New Jersey to face the charges related to Anderson's death.
The case against Antwine King proceeded to trial, where he was convicted of murder for the fatal shooting. Following the verdict, King faces a sentence of 30 years to life in prison. His sentencing was scheduled for January 5, 2027.
