In the early morning hours of July 22, 2023, the life of 32-year-old Carlos Ariel Zayas was tragically cut short. At approximately 3:16 a.m., Newark police were dispatched to the 600 block of Broadway in the city's North Ward following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Zayas outside a nightclub, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 3:51 a.m.
A resident of Jersey City, Carlos Zayas was born in Newark and had established a career as a certified electrician after studying at Lincoln Tech. He is survived by his parents, his partner Jesenia Cintron-Gonzalez, and their two sons.
As of now, the investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing, led by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force. No arrests have been made in connection with the death of Carlos Zayas, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. The circumstances that led to the shooting remain unclear.
