In the late afternoon of February 22, 2019, tragedy struck in Newark, New Jersey, forever altering the lives of a local family. Jesse McNeill, a 25-year-old Black / African American male, was on Clinton Avenue when the sound of gunfire shattered the day's calm. When Newark police officers arrived at the 700 block of the street shortly after 5:00 p.m., they found McNeill unresponsive and suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Despite the swift response, his injuries were too severe.
Jesse McNeill, a resident of Newark, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:38 p.m.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
