In the early morning hours of May 7, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the predawn quiet in Newark, New Jersey, leaving a scene of chaos and tragedy in its wake. When the echoes of the shots faded, 38-year-old Julius K. Ferguson, a Black male from Newark, lay fatally wounded. The incident, which unfolded in the 400 block of Orange Street, also left three other men injured, though their wounds were not considered life-threatening.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene at
approximately 2:58 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered the four victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts, Julius K. Ferguson was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:20 a.m. The three other victims were quickly transported to University Hospital for treatment. The shooting marked a grim milestone as the fourth multiple shooting in the city in just over three weeks, raising concerns about a surge in gun violence within the community.
In the aftermath of the deadly shooting, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for this act of violence. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and law enforcement officials have not publicly identified any suspects or discussed a possible motive for the attack. The investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities continue to seek justice for Julius K. Ferguson and the other victims.
