On the evening of February 20, 2022, a violent encounter in Newark, New Jersey, tragically cut short the life of 18-year-old Abdoulaye Drame. The young man, a college student from the Bronx, New York, was in the city's Central Ward for reasons that remain unclear to authorities. It was around 6:30 p.m. when the sound of gunfire echoed near the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Blum Street.
Following the shooting, good Samaritans in the area managed to flag down a passing Emergency
Medical Services unit. They found Drame suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Abdoulaye Drame succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 7:39 p.m.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has since been leading the investigation into the homicide. However, details regarding a motive or potential suspects have not been released to the public. As of now, the case remains an active and ongoing investigation, with no arrests having been made in connection with the fatal shooting.
