On a Sunday evening in Hampton, Virginia, the life of 19-year-old Joshua Scriven was tragically cut short. On January 15, 2023, just before 6 p.m. in the first block of County Street, near the Phoebus area, gunshots rang out. Scriven was walking in a parking lot when he was struck by gunfire. Fatally wounded, he was first taken to a nearby fire station before being transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The investigation into the shooting continued
for months. Then, in the late summer, authorities made arrests in connection with Scriven's death. On August 19, 2023, police arrested 22-year-old Malicah Forbes. He faced charges of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm in a public place, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
A month later, on September 18, 2023, a second suspect, 18-year-old Amauri Powell, was also taken into custody. Powell was charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm in a public place.
